When to Enroll

You'll have many dates to keep track of before your 65th birthday. Here's a reminder on Original Medicare timelines.

Initial Enrollment Period

Medicare Part A — Hospital

If you're paid Social Security benefits, Part A benefits will start on the first day of the month you turn 65.

Medicare Part B — Medical

You'll have three opportunities to sign up for Part B:


 

 Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) Special Enrollment Period (SEP)

 

Timing
 

 

Seven months that include:

  • Three months before your 65th birthday month
  • Your 65th birthday month
  • Three months after your 65th birthday month

 

October 15-December 7

 

Certain situations may allow you to:

  • Join,
  • Switch, or
  • Drop a Medicare Plan

Additional Coverage Choices

If you need more coverage than Original Medicare Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) offers, you should consider:

  • Part C or Medicare Advantage – Combines Part A and Part B coverage with a variety of health benefits. Some Medicare Advantage plans offer coverage for prescription drugs and you pay a monthly premium.
  • Part D - Offers prescription drug coverage. Part D coverage is available as a stand-alone plan or may be included with a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan or Medigap – Help pay for health care costs not covered by Part A and Part B. Medigap plans allow you to select your doctors and hospitals.
